Student moves for Birkbeck

from £120

Every figure includes VAT.

Birkbeck teaches in the evening and most of its students are mature, part-time, working, or all three. That makes it the one university on this list whose moves do not cluster around a September weekend, because a large share of its students are moving flats like any other Londoner rather than moving into halls.

A student move that is usually a flat move

Because so many Birkbeck students are working adults, the typical job here is not a hall room. It is a one bedroom flat, a house share, or a family moving across London while somebody studies in the evenings.

That means the studio and one bedroom bands are usually the right ones to look at rather than the student room price, and the cost guides are more use than this page. The relevant thing Birkbeck adds is the timing.

Evening teaching, and what it does to the timing

A student who is in class from six is not moving on a weekday evening, and one who works during the day is not moving then either. Birkbeck moves cluster into weekends and into the gaps between terms far more sharply than other universities.

Saturdays cost ten to fifteen per cent more than a midweek slot everywhere in London. Where a Friday morning or a Monday works, it is the cheapest thing you can change.

Worth knowing

  • Look at the flat cost guides rather than the student room price if you are moving a whole home
  • A Friday or Monday costs less than a Saturday, which is the slot most Birkbeck students want
  • Garden Halls on Cartwright Gardens takes Birkbeck students and has its own page
  • Bloomsbury parking applies here as it does to UCL and SOAS: plan the stop, do not look for one

Birkbeck: common questions

How much is a student move for Birkbeck?

If you are moving a hall room, £150 to £340 including VAT. Most Birkbeck moves are whole flats rather than rooms, which puts them in the studio band at £340 to £620 or the one bedroom band at £420 to £850.

Does Birkbeck have its own halls?

Not its own, but Birkbeck students can live in the University of London intercollegiate halls, including Garden Halls on Cartwright Gardens, which has its own page here.

Why do Birkbeck moves not follow the usual student calendar?

Because the teaching is in the evening and most students are mature and part-time. They move when working Londoners move, which is weekends and the gaps between terms, rather than on one September weekend.

When is the cheapest time to book?

A midweek slot, and specifically not a Saturday, which costs ten to fifteen per cent more everywhere in London. For an evening student a Friday morning or a Monday is often possible and always cheaper.
