A house move in Central London is mostly logistics and partly lifting. Two addresses, two sets of parking restrictions, often two different boroughs with their own suspension rules, and a completion time nobody controls. Sorting that out before the day is what separates a move that finishes by mid-afternoon from one that finishes in the dark.
How a Central London house move actually runs
We start with the two addresses rather than the volume. Which borough controls each street, whether there is a bay within carrying distance, whether either building has a lift and whether that lift needs booking. In the centre those answers change the plan more than the number of rooms does.
From there it is a sequence rather than a scramble. Wrapping first, then the heavy furniture while everyone is fresh, then boxes, then the awkward pieces that need two people and a plan. Loading in that order means the van is packed properly rather than stacked in whatever sequence things came out of the door.
Parking, bay suspensions and the borough you are in
Almost every Central London street is in a controlled parking zone, and a van left on a single yellow during the working day will be ticketed. Where there is no bay within carrying distance we apply to the council for a suspension, and the lead time is set by them rather than by us. Westminster, Camden, Islington, Kensington and Chelsea, Southwark, Lambeth and Tower Hamlets all want several working days, and longer in busy periods.
That single fact is the most common reason a move has to be planned a fortnight out rather than a couple of days. It is also why we ask for the exact address rather than just the postcode: boundaries run through the middle of areas like King's Cross, Fitzrovia and Aldgate, and applying to the wrong authority wastes the whole lead time.
Wrapping, dismantling and what actually protects your furniture
Wrapping happens in the room, not at the van. Sofas and mattresses go into covers before they reach the doorway, wooden pieces get corner protection, and mirrors and glass are wrapped and carried flat rather than upright. Once loaded, everything is strapped rather than stacked loose, which is what stops the load shifting on the way.
A lot of Central London furniture has to come apart to leave the building at all. Bed frames, wardrobes and large dining tables routinely will not turn on a Georgian half landing. We dismantle and reassemble as part of the job. The exception is flat-pack that has already been built and moved once, because the fixings do not always survive a second dismantling, and we will say so rather than take it apart and hope.
Completion day, and what happens when the keys are late
Chains slip. It is normal and we plan for it rather than treating it as your problem. Because the price is fixed rather than hourly, waiting for keys does not cost you more, which removes the pressure to rush a job that should not be rushed.
What we do need is a realistic picture when you book. A completion expected at midday and one expected at four o'clock are different jobs, because the second may push the unload into the next morning. Moving out of Central London, or into it
Roughly half the house moves we do have one end outside the centre: out to the suburbs, out to the home counties, or a long haul to another part of the country. Those are priced as one job rather than by the mile, and the congestion charge applies only to the leg that enters the zone.
Moves into the centre have their own quirk, which is that the difficult end is usually the new address rather than the old one. You know your current parking and staircase. You may not yet know that the new block wants the goods lift booked three days ahead. We check that end as carefully as the one you are leaving.

Access and what to plan for
The floor, the staircase and where the van can legally stop decide a Central London house move more than the volume does. We ask about all three at both ends before quoting. External steps up to a raised ground floor, a half landing that will not turn a wardrobe, a red route with no legal stopping, a mews too narrow for a Luton, or an estate where the front door is a hundred metres from the nearest car park all change the crew and the vehicle rather than being discovered on the day.
Van and crew
A one or two bedroom flat usually fits a Luton in a single run. A three bedroom house is either a Luton and two trips or a larger vehicle. The constraint in the centre is often not capacity but access: cobbled mews in Belgravia, the lanes off Shad Thames, basement loading bays with a two metre height limit and the railway arches in SE1 all rule out a box van. Where that applies we bring a transit and do an extra run, and it is in the price from the start rather than added later.

How much notice we need

Smaller moves can often be done within the same week. End of month Fridays are the busiest slots in London and they go first, so if your completion is on one, book as early as you can.

What tends to go wrong
Three things we see repeatedly on this kind of job, all of them avoidable with a bit of notice.
Leaving the bay suspension too late
Councils need several working days and will not expedite. A suspension asked for on the Wednesday before a Saturday move is not going to happen, and the result is a long carry that nobody planned for.
Measuring the sofa but not the staircase
The half landing turn is what stops furniture in a Georgian conversion, not the width of the front door. Measure the narrowest point of the stairs as well as the piece itself.
Still packing when the crew arrives
A booked loading bay slot is often only an hour or two. Boxes being taped while the clock runs is the single most common reason a smooth move turns into a rushed one.

Is the Congestion Charge extra?

Do you provide boxes and packing materials?
Blankets, covers and straps come as standard because they protect the furniture. Boxes and packing materials are part of our packing service, and we can drop them off beforehand if you are packing yourself so you are not starting the night before with nothing to fill.
Can you move me at a weekend?
Yes, seven days a week. Weekends are in higher demand than a midweek morning and book up further ahead, and if a bay suspension is involved the council application has to go in earlier still.
