Loading and parking
Tavistock Square is Camden controlled parking inside the Bloomsbury conservation area, and the roads round it carry through traffic between Euston Road and Russell Square, so a van cannot sit in the carriageway while a room is unloaded. There is no loading bay of the hall's own. The building is a converted terrace with a listed façade, rooms spread across the ground floor and three floors above, and the corridors inside follow the old houses rather than a purpose-built plan. On the September arrival weekend the University staggers arrivals, which is when the stop outside is easiest; at other times we use the nearest legal bay and carry.
More on Bloomsbury parking and access →A terrace of houses, not a tower
Connaught was built as a run of separate Georgian townhouses, and although the inside has been knocked through and adapted, the proportions are still those of a house: a front step, turning stairs and corridors that change direction where one house meets the next. A room on the third floor at the far end is a longer carry than the address makes it sound.
That matters more for the size of your boxes than for the number of them. Medium boxes and soft bags go through a terrace easily, while a large trunk or a flat-packed wardrobe that was fine in the car becomes the thing that holds up the stairs for everyone behind it.
Catered, with a fridge and a microwave and nothing else
The University is clear that there are no cooking facilities for residents at Connaught, only a fridge and a microwave on each floor, with breakfast and dinner served in the dining room. Pans, a toaster and a rice cooker have nowhere to go and end up under the bed until June.
Because the hall is intercollegiate, the people arriving come from King's, UCL, LSE, SOAS, Queen Mary and several smaller institutions whose terms start on different days. The arrival window is spread wider than at a single university hall, and the first Saturday is busier than the weekend after it.
Worth knowing
- Pack into medium boxes and soft bags that can be carried up turning stairs in one hand
- Leave cooking equipment at home, as residents have no kitchen at Connaught
- Give us the floor and which end of the terrace your room is at when you book
- Pick a later arrival day if your course starts late, because the first weekend is the busy one
- Book the June move before exams, even though the hall is small, since every Bloomsbury hall empties that same fortnight
Connaught Hall: common questions
How much does it cost to move into Connaught Hall?
A single room is £150 to £340 including VAT, most around £220, covering the crew, the van, the wrapping, the fuel and the Congestion Charge. A twin room shared by two people is two lots of belongings and is priced as such.
Can you park outside Connaught Hall?
Only briefly. Tavistock Square is Camden controlled parking with through traffic on the roads round it and no loading bay for the hall. During the September arrival weekend the University staggers arrivals, which makes a short stop outside workable; at any other time we stop at the nearest legal bay and carry the last stretch.
Can I cook at Connaught Hall?
No. It is fully catered, with breakfast and dinner served daily, and the only equipment for residents is a fridge and a microwave on each floor. Anything else you bring for cooking is weight you carry in September and back out again in June.
Which universities have students at Connaught Hall?
It is a University of London intercollegiate hall, so residents come from its member institutions, including King's, UCL, LSE, SOAS and Queen Mary. That is why arrivals are spread over more days than at a hall belonging to one college.
Can you take my room into storage for the summer?
Yes. We move it into a self storage facility in June and bring it back in September, £280 to £620 for both legs booked together. You pay the facility for the storage; we do not hold anything on our own premises.
