Moving in and out of Nutford House

from £120

Every figure includes VAT.

Nutford House is the odd one out among the intercollegiate halls: a red brick building from 1916 on the corner of Brown Street and Nutford Place, a few minutes from Marble Arch, rather than one more address in Bloomsbury. It houses up to 140 students, the rooms are small and catered, and the move is short in every sense except the drive across town from anywhere else.

Loading and parking

Brown Street and Nutford Place are narrow residential streets in Westminster controlled parking, just east of Edgware Road, which is a red route where a van cannot stop to unload. There is no loading bay at the hall, so we use the nearest legal bay in the side streets and carry. The address is inside the Congestion Charge zone. The building is a period one, and parts of the hall are in terraced houses rather than one block, so expect stairs and ask which part your room is in.

Small rooms, and what fits in them

LSE lists the single rooms at Nutford House at 6.4 square metres, with a bed, wash basin, wardrobe, desk and storage, and bathrooms shared along the corridor. That is small even by hall standards, and it is the best reason to bring less than you think you need.

In practice a Nutford room is often one of the cheaper moves we do, because there is only so much a room that size can hold. Two suitcases, a few boxes of books and a bag of bedding is usually the whole thing, and anything beyond that tends to end up living under the bed.

Across town from the rest of the University

Nutford is a 45 minute walk from Bloomsbury, and most residents take the Tube from Marble Arch or Edgware Road. For a move, the distance matters when a room is going to or from another hall or a shared flat in east or south London, because the drive across the West End at the wrong time of day takes longer than the loading.

Early mornings and weekends make the difference here. Oxford Street and Marble Arch traffic builds through the day, and a Saturday morning run from Nutford to Bloomsbury is a fraction of the same run on a weekday afternoon.

Worth knowing

  • Bring less than you would for a bigger hall, since the rooms are around 6.4 square metres
  • Leave pans at home, because breakfast and dinner are served every day
  • Tell us if your room is in the main building or one of the houses, for the stairs
  • Move early in the day to avoid the Marble Arch and Oxford Street traffic
  • If you are moving to another hall in September, book both ends as one job

Nutford House: common questions

How much does it cost to move into Nutford House?

A single room is £150 to £340 including VAT, most around £220, covering the crew, the van, the wrapping, the fuel and the Congestion Charge. Nutford rooms are small, so moves here usually sit towards the lower end of that band.

Can you park outside Nutford House?

Only in a legal bay nearby. Brown Street and Nutford Place are narrow Westminster controlled parking streets with no loading bay for the hall, and Edgware Road at the end is a red route where we cannot stop. We plan the stop in advance and carry the short distance to the door.

Is Nutford House catered?

Yes. Breakfast, or brunch at weekends, and dinner are served every day and included in the rent, so there is no need to bring cooking equipment.

Which universities have students at Nutford House?

It is managed by the University of London as an intercollegiate hall, so residents come from its member institutions. SOAS and LSE both list it among the halls their students can live in, with bookings made through the University of London.

Can you clear what I leave behind in June?

Yes. End of term room clearance is £120 to £280, with everything taken to a licensed transfer station and a waste transfer note provided, which is cheaper than the hall charging you for items left in the room.
