A second-hand sofa is cheap right up to the moment you have to get it home. The seller is on a fourth floor in Hackney, the listing says "collection only", and a parcel courier will not take a sofa at all. That is the job we do most weekends: collect from the seller at a time agreed with them, carry it down their stairs and up yours, and put it in the room you bought it for.
Check it will fit before you pay the seller
Most marketplace deliveries that go wrong go wrong before the van is booked, because the buyer measured the item and not the way in. A standard internal door in a London flat is 762mm wide, older conversions often have 686mm doors to the bedrooms, and a three seater sofa is usually 850mm to 950mm deep, so it goes through on its side or not at all. The half landing on a Victorian or Georgian staircase is where long pieces stop: a wardrobe or a corner sofa that would fit the room cannot turn the stairs to reach it.
So ask the seller for three things before you agree a price: the height, width and depth, whether the legs, feet or back cushions come off, and which floor it is on and whether there is a lift. Send those to us with a photograph of your own narrowest door or turn, and we will tell you honestly whether it goes in. It is far cheaper to walk away from a listing than to pay for a sofa that ends up living in your hallway.
Sellers who are out, late or vague
Private sellers are not a shop with a collection desk. They go out, they sell the same wardrobe twice, and they describe a fifth floor walk-up as "a few stairs". A van that arrives at a locked door still costs money, and most of the wasted trips in this work come from a collection time agreed in a Facebook message three days earlier and never confirmed.
Give us the seller's number when you book and we confirm a window with them directly the day before, and again when the crew is on the way. If the seller cannot be there, they can leave the item with a neighbour or a concierge, but the arrangement has to be agreed in advance rather than improvised on the doorstep. Tell us if the seller's end is upstairs too, because that makes it a two person carry at both ends rather than one.
Paying the seller, and seeing it before it is loaded
Pay the seller yourself, before collection day, by bank transfer or through the platform where it offers that. The crew does not carry cash for the item or hand money over on your behalf. It keeps the sale between you and the seller, which is where it belongs if anything about the item turns out not to match the listing.
If you cannot be at the collection, we can send photographs of the item at the seller's door before it is loaded, so you see the condition for yourself rather than finding out at your end. We are movers rather than inspectors, and we cannot vouch for whether a mechanism works or a fabric is original. What we can do is show you what is in front of us and wait while you decide.
Bed bugs, and why we look before we lift
Bed bugs travel in second-hand upholstered furniture, and London has plenty of them. They hide in the seams and piping of mattresses, sofa bases, headboards and the joints of bed frames, and the signs are small dark spots, shed skins or the bugs themselves. Ask the seller to send close photographs of the seams and underside before you commit, and look properly at the collection if you are there.
If an item has visible signs of an infestation, we will not load it. That is not squeamishness: the next job goes in the same van, and a sofa that brings bed bugs into your flat would be a far more expensive purchase than the listing suggested. Hard furniture such as tables, chests of drawers and wardrobes carries much less risk than anything with padding.
Several pickups in one run
Furnishing a flat second-hand usually means a table from one seller, chairs from another and a bookcase from a third, all in different postcodes. Booked as one run, those collections share the van, the crew and the Congestion Charge, and the route is planned so we are not crossing the river three times. It costs far less than three separate jobs.
Send every address in the order that suits the sellers, with each item's size and floor, and we will build the route and come back with one fixed price for the lot. A marketplace pickup on the way back from an IKEA collection is one of the most common pairings we do.
eBay collection-only listings and auction pickups
Collection-only eBay listings are often bigger and cheaper than anything that can be posted, which is exactly why they are collection only. The seller will usually want the item paid for through eBay first and collected within a set number of days. Give us the collection deadline along with the address and we will work to it.
Auction houses and dealers, including the salerooms around Mayfair, Chelsea and Islington, have their own rules: a paid invoice, a lot number, a fixed collection window and sometimes a goods entrance at the back rather than the front door. Tell us the house and the lot and we will arrive with what they need to release it.
Who this is for
Anyone who has bought furniture second-hand on Gumtree, Facebook Marketplace, eBay or from an auction and has no way to get it from the seller's door to their own room.
What is included
- Collection window confirmed with the seller directly before the day
- Two person carry at both ends, including stairs with no lift
- Taking off feet, legs and back cushions to get through doors, and putting them back on
- Blankets and wrapping for the journey
- Photographs from the seller's door on request, if you cannot be there
- Several pickups combined into one planned run
- Congestion Charge, ULEZ and fuel inside the quoted figure
What is not included
Stated plainly so nobody books the wrong thing.
- Paying the seller or handling money for the item
- Checking that an item works or is as described
- Assembling flat-pack from parts
- Upholstered items with visible signs of bed bugs
Access and what to plan for
Two addresses means two sets of access, and the seller's end is the one nobody asks about. Find out the floor, whether there is a lift and where a van can stop outside, because a seller on a red route or behind an estate barrier changes the job. At your end we need the same, plus the narrowest door or turn the item has to pass.
Van and crew
A transit for almost every marketplace pickup. It fits under the height barriers at estates and car parks, it can stop on streets a Luton cannot, and a sofa, a wardrobe or a table and chairs all go in with room to spare. A multi-stop run furnishing a whole flat may need a Luton instead, and we will say so when we quote.

- The floor at each end, and whether there is a lift
- The distance between seller and buyer
- The number of pickups in the run
- Parking at the seller's address
- Evening or weekend collection times
How much notice we need
A few days is usually plenty, and same-week collections are common. Marketplace sellers often want an item gone quickly, so we take short-notice and same-day pickups when the diary allows. Weekends book up first, because that is when most sellers are home.
How to book
- Ask the seller for the dimensions, the floor and whether there is a lift
- Send us both addresses, the item size and a photograph of your narrowest door or turn
- We confirm it will fit and send one fixed price
- Pay the seller yourself and send us their number
- We confirm the window with the seller and collect
- We carry it in and place it in the room
What tends to go wrong
Three things we see repeatedly on this kind of job, all of them avoidable with a bit of notice.
Buying before measuring the way in
The item fitting the room means nothing if it cannot pass the front door or turn the stairs. Measure the narrowest point, not the space it is going into.
A collection time nobody confirmed
A time agreed in a message days ago is a hope, not a booking. Give us the seller's number so the window is confirmed the day before and again on the way.
Not looking at the seams
A cheap sofa with bed bugs is the most expensive thing you will ever buy. Ask for close photographs of the seams and underside before you pay.
We hold goods in transit and public liability insurance, and we are a registered waste carrier for the clearance work. Certificates go to your building management directly where they ask for them. Full detail is on the about page.
Gumtree and Marketplace Furniture Delivery: common questions
How much does Gumtree or Facebook Marketplace furniture delivery cost?
A single item across Central London costs £90 to £220 including VAT, and most land near £130. The floor at each end moves the price more than the item does: a sofa from a ground floor flat to a building with a lift sits at the bottom of the band, and the same sofa down four flights and up three sits near the top. Several pickups in one run cost less than booking them separately.
Can you collect if the seller is not home?
Only if the seller has arranged for someone to hand it over, such as a neighbour, a flatmate or the concierge, and that is agreed before the day. We will not collect from a doorstep or a communal hallway without someone there to release it, because we have no way of knowing it is the right item.
Do I need to be there at the collection?
No. Many customers meet us at their own end only. Pay the seller before the day and give us their number, and if you want to see the item before it travels we can send photographs from the seller's door first.
Can you pay the seller for me?
No. Pay the seller yourself by bank transfer or through the platform before collection day. The crew does not carry cash for the item, which keeps the sale between you and the seller.
Will a second-hand sofa fit through my door?
Measure the depth of the sofa, not its length, and compare it with your narrowest door. A standard internal door is 762mm and many older London flats have 686mm bedroom doors, while most three seaters are 850mm to 950mm deep, so they go through on their side with the feet off. Send us the sofa dimensions and a photograph of the door and the stairs, and we will tell you before you buy.
Can you collect several items from different sellers in one trip?
Yes. Send every address with each item's size and floor, and we plan one route and give one fixed price. It is much cheaper than separate bookings, because the van, the crew and the Congestion Charge are shared.
Do you collect second-hand mattresses?
Yes, bagged, and only after a look at the seams. A second-hand mattress is the item most likely to carry bed bugs, so ask the seller for close photographs before you buy, and we will not load one with visible signs of an infestation.
Can you pick up from the seller today?
Often, if you call early and the seller is in. Marketplace sellers like an item gone quickly, and short-notice pickups are a normal part of this work. Weekends fill first.
