Loading and parking
Malet Street is Camden controlled parking, and LSE's own description of the hall says there is little on-street parking apart from a few metered spaces opposite, with the nearest car park under the Royal National Hotel. The street is inside the Congestion Charge zone. During term it carries a steady flow of students crossing between Senate House, Birkbeck and the student union, so the pavement is busier than the traffic. There is no loading bay at the door, so we use the metered spaces or a legal stop close by and carry in.
More on Bloomsbury parking and access →A street full of universities, and not much kerb
The buildings on either side of Malet Street belong to the University and its colleges, and the kerb space that exists is shared between deliveries to all of them. A few metered bays opposite the hall are the realistic place to stop, and they are more often free early in the morning or at a weekend than on a teaching weekday.
That shapes when we would suggest moving outside the September weekend. A Saturday morning at College Hall is a quiet, short job. A Tuesday at eleven, with the libraries open and deliveries going into every building, is the same room with a longer walk from the van.
Double rooms and the two flats
Most College Hall residents are in catered single rooms, many of them en-suite, and a single room here is the standard hall move. The double rooms and the two self-contained flats are different, because two people or a flat's worth of things fill a van in a way one student does not.
Tell us which you have when you ask for a price. A catered single needs no kitchen equipment and sits in the middle of the band; a double or a flat moves towards the top of it.
Worth knowing
- Move at a weekend or early on a weekday, when the metered bays opposite are most often free
- Say if you are in a single, a double or one of the flats, since they are very different loads
- Leave pans at home, because breakfast and dinner are included in the rent
- Label boxes with your room number for the stairs and lifts rather than your name
- Book June storage and the September return together while you are still in the room
College Hall: common questions
How much does it cost to move into College Hall?
A single room is £150 to £340 including VAT, most around £220, which covers the crew, the van, the wrapping, the fuel and the Congestion Charge that applies on Malet Street. A double room or one of the flats sits towards the top of that band.
Can you park outside College Hall?
Not for long. Malet Street is Camden controlled parking with little on-street space apart from a few metered bays opposite the hall, and no loading bay at the door. We use those bays or the nearest legal stop, and early mornings and weekends are much easier than a teaching weekday.
Is College Hall catered?
Yes. Breakfast, or brunch at weekends, and dinner are included in the rent, so kitchen equipment is not needed. Most rooms are en-suite singles, with some doubles and two self-contained flats.
Which universities live at College Hall?
It is a University of London intercollegiate hall, so its residents come from member institutions including UCL, King's, LSE, SOAS and Queen Mary, and postgraduates live alongside undergraduates.
Can you take my things to the airport at the end of term?
Yes, £120 to £260 to Heathrow or Gatwick with cases and boxes, and the drive built into the figure. Book it before exams start, because every Bloomsbury hall empties in the same fortnight in June.
