Man and Van in Russell Square: Removals Around WC1N

Covering WC1N, WC1B in Camden. The Brunswick Centre, hospital streets and Georgian flats east of the square. Fixed price agreed before we start, with the parking, the lift and the access sorted in advance.

Russell Square is the part of WC1 where the moves are mostly homes rather than halls. East of the square, around Bernard Street, Grenville Street and Guilford Street, the flats are lived in year round by people who work at the hospitals on Queen Square and Great Ormond Street, by long standing Camden tenants and by postgraduates renting privately. That gives the area a steadier rhythm than the university streets to the west.

The Brunswick Centre sets the tone for a lot of the work. Its flats sit above the shops in two long stepped blocks, reached from the street by stair and lift and then along open walkways, and a van cannot get anywhere near the front door of any of them. Knowing which entrance and which lift serves a flat saves most of an hour on the day.

The buildings in Russell Square

Several kinds of building within a few hundred metres. The Brunswick Centre is listed concrete laid out on decks, so moves there are about lifts and walkway distance rather than stairs. Around Guilford Street, Mecklenburgh Square and Doughty Street the stock is Georgian terrace converted into flats, with the tight turning staircases that go with it and basement flats down front area steps. Scattered between them are interwar and later blocks with lifts, some of them small. Then there is the institutional stock: Goodenough College on Mecklenburgh Square, International Hall on Lansdowne Terrace and accommodation linked to the hospitals, each with a front desk and its own rules on when you can move.

Parking, loading and access in Russell Square

Russell Square is inside the Congestion Charge zone, and the ULEZ applies here as across London; both are inside our price. Camden controls the parking. The square itself is ringed by large hotels with taxis and coaches at their entrances, and Southampton Row and Woburn Place carry buses, so the obvious frontages are the worst places to load. Great Ormond Street and the roads around Queen Square carry hospital traffic, including ambulances, and we do not block them. For the Brunswick Centre we confirm with the building management which entrance and loading point your flat uses before the day. Elsewhere we load from Grenville Street, Handel Street, Lansdowne Terrace or the quieter end of Guilford Street, or book a Camden suspension for a full flat.

Man and van in Russell Square: common questions

Can you move a flat in the Brunswick Centre?

Yes. The van cannot reach the flats, so everything travels by lift and along the walkway to the street, and how long that takes depends on which block and which end your flat is at. Give us the flat number when you ask for a price and we will plan the route and the loading point in advance.

I work shifts at one of the hospitals. Can you move me at a weekend?

Yes. Weekends are often easier here anyway, with less hospital and hotel traffic around Guilford Street and Queen Square. Book further ahead for a Saturday because those slots go first.

Do the halls on Mecklenburgh Square and Lansdowne Terrace need a slot booked?

Usually. Both have staffed front desks and prefer moves arranged in advance, especially at the start and end of term. Tell us the hall and the date and we will work to whatever slot they give.

Is Russell Square in the Congestion Charge zone?

Yes. WC1N and WC1B are well inside it, and the charge is already in the figure we quote.
