Loading and parking
Taviton Street is a short residential street running between Gordon Square and Endsleigh Gardens in Camden controlled parking, with no loading bay for either building. It is quieter than Gower Street nearby, which helps, but it is still a street of listed houses where the van stops briefly to unload and then moves. Inside, UCL states that there is no lift to the upper floors, and because the eleven houses only connect at ground level, a room is reached up the staircase of its own house rather than along a corridor from another.
More on Bloomsbury parking and access →Eleven houses, eleven staircases
The buildings were houses before they were a hall, and UCL has kept them as houses: level and connected on the ground floor, separate above it. For a move that means the question is not only which room but which front door, because carrying up the wrong staircase means carrying back down again.
Give us the building, East or West, and the house or entrance as well as the room number. Pack into bags and medium boxes that one person can take up a narrow Victorian staircase, which are quicker than a few heavy boxes on every floor.
East, West and the twin rooms
East is the larger building, with mostly single rooms, a handful of twins and one postgraduate flat. West is smaller, with a higher share of twin rooms, and a twin moving out in June is two people's belongings through one doorway on one morning.
Both are self-catered, with large shared kitchens by the standards of converted houses. That is useful all year and a problem in the last week, when food and cleaning things that belong to the whole kitchen are still in the cupboards.
Worth knowing
- Tell us East or West, the entrance and the room number, since the houses only connect at ground level
- Pack small for the staircases, because there is no lift above the ground floor
- If you are in a twin, agree with your roommate who moves out first
- Clear the shared kitchen together a week before contracts end
- Book the June move before exams, when every Bloomsbury hall empties at once
Campbell House: common questions
How much does it cost to move into Campbell House?
A single room is £150 to £340 including VAT, most around £220, covering the crew, the van, the wrapping, the fuel and the Congestion Charge. A room high up one of the townhouses sits further up that band than a ground floor room, because every box goes up by hand.
Can you park outside Campbell House?
Briefly, to unload. Taviton Street is Camden controlled parking with no loading bay, and although it is quieter than the streets around it, the van stops, unloads and moves on rather than waiting outside.
Does Campbell House have a lift?
No. UCL states that there is no lift to the upper floors, and the eleven listed houses only connect on the ground floor, so each room is reached by the staircase of its own house.
Is Campbell House East different from Campbell House West?
They are two buildings facing each other on Taviton Street, both self-catered. East is larger and mostly single rooms; West is smaller with more twins. For a move the difference is which side of the street the van stops on, so tell us which you are in.
Can you clear my room at the end of term?
Yes, £120 to £280 for a room, taken to a licensed transfer station with a waste transfer note, and usable items go to charity where we can place them. It is cheaper booked alongside a storage or airport run than on its own.
