What the hall charges, and why clearing is cheaper
Halls charge for clearing a room and they are not competing on price when they do it. It is a penalty rather than a service, and it usually lands on a deposit you were hoping to see again.
A clearance from us is £120 to £280 for a room, which includes the tipping fees at a licensed transfer station. It is almost always less than the charge, and unlike the charge it comes with a waste transfer note.
The paperwork, which matters more than people think
We are a registered waste carrier and everything we take goes to a licensed transfer station with a waste transfer note issued to you. That note proves where your waste went.
It matters because fly tipping is prosecuted against the person whose waste it was, not only the person who dumped it. A student room cleared by somebody with a van and no paperwork is a risk with your name on it.
What is worth keeping, selling or giving away
Anything in good condition goes to a charity or a reuse network rather than a transfer station, which lowers the weight and therefore the cost. Working white goods, decent furniture, books and clothing all have somewhere better to go than a skip.
The honest list of what is not worth keeping: drying racks, cheap shelving, a desk chair that came from a supermarket, and every pan that has been through a shared kitchen for a year.
Worth knowing
- Book the clearance with your move or airport run rather than as a separate visit
- Start a week out, not on the last morning, when the corridor is already full
- Put anything decent on a local selling group before term ends, while there are still buyers
- Insist on a waste transfer note from anyone who takes your things away
- Empty the food cupboard first: it is the part everyone forgets and the part that smells

Is it cheaper than letting the hall clear it?
Almost always, and the hall charge usually comes out of a deposit. The other difference is the paperwork: we issue a waste transfer note and the hall charge is simply a charge.
Do you provide a waste transfer note?
Always. We are a registered waste carrier and the note evidences where your waste went. Fly tipping is prosecuted against the person whose waste it was as well as whoever dumped it, so it is worth insisting on from anyone.
What happens to things that are still usable?
