Moving in and out of Schafer House

from £120

Every figure includes VAT.

Schafer House holds around 365 undergraduates in flats of up to five rooms on Drummond Street, a few minutes from Euston station and a ten-minute walk from the main campus. It opened in 1995, and UCL gives it a ten-minute drop-off with limited spaces, which is the fact the whole move is planned around.

Loading and parking

UCL gives Schafer House a ten-minute drop-off with limited spaces, which is enough for a van that arrives with a crew ready to unload and not enough for one that arrives and waits for the student. Drummond Street sits in Camden controlled parking, and the streets around Euston have been reshaped by years of HS2 construction, so we check the approach on the day rather than trusting last year's route. UCL notes that the lift does not reach every floor.

Ten minutes at the kerb

A ten-minute drop-off is workable for a single room only if everything is ready to come off the van the moment it stops. That means the student has already checked in, knows the flat and room number, and is at the door, while the crew does the lifting.

Where that is not possible, or the room holds more than usual, we unload in two short stops rather than one long one. It keeps the drop-off free for the next arrival and it is far better than a ticket.

Flats of five, and the kitchen that goes with them

Every flat at Schafer shares a kitchen, dining area and bathroom among up to five people. That is a small group to agree things with, so settle who brings the pans, the kettle and the toaster before September, and the flat arrives with one of each instead of three.

In June the kitchen is where the trouble is. Food, half-used cleaning products and a shared drying rack all belong to everybody and nobody, and the flat that clears it together a week early avoids the charge that lands on everyone.

Worth knowing

  • Check in and have the room number ready before the van reaches the ten-minute drop-off
  • Agree with your flat of five who brings the kitchen equipment
  • Tell us your floor, since the lift does not reach every floor
  • Allow for HS2 works around Euston changing the approach from one term to the next
  • Clear the shared kitchen as a flat a week before contracts end

Schafer House: common questions

How much does it cost to move into Schafer House?

A single room is £150 to £340 including VAT, most around £220, covering the crew, the van, the wrapping, the fuel and the Congestion Charge. Storage out in June and back in September is £280 to £620 for both legs together.

Can you park outside Schafer House?

Only in the ten-minute drop-off UCL provides, and the spaces are limited. We arrive ready to unload immediately, and if the room needs longer we split it into two short stops rather than overstaying in controlled parking.

Is Schafer House catered?

No. It is self-catered, in flats of up to five rooms sharing a kitchen, dining area and bathroom, so kitchen equipment is worth bringing once agreed across the flat.

Does Schafer House have a lift?

UCL notes that the lift does not reach every floor, and asks residents who need lift access to say so when booking. Give us your floor and we plan the carry around it.

How far is Schafer House from the main UCL campus?

About ten minutes on foot, which is close enough that a mid-year move to or from a Bloomsbury hall is a short job. For a local move of one room within the area, the lower end of the £150 to £340 band is typical.
