Moving in and out of Astor College

from £120

Every figure includes VAT.

Astor College sits on Charlotte Street, which is one long row of restaurants with tables on the pavement and delivery vans double parked outside them from mid-morning. It is a good address and a difficult one to unload at, and the difference between a straightforward move and a long one is entirely what time you arrive.

Loading and parking

Charlotte Street is Camden controlled parking, narrow, and busy with restaurant deliveries from mid-morning until late. There is no loading bay at the door. Early morning is genuinely different from any other time of day here: at eight the street is empty and at eleven it is not. The studios and duplexes at Astor hold more than a standard room does, so a duplex move is closer to a small flat than to a hall room.

Self-catered, which changes what you bring

Unlike Ramsay round the corner, Astor is self-catered, so the kitchen boxes are not wasted weight. Pans, plates, a kettle and a decent knife all earn their place, and a shared kitchen means agreeing with flatmates who is bringing what rather than arriving with four kettles.

It also changes the June move, because you have accumulated food, cleaning things and a drying rack that nobody wants to take home. Those are the items that end up in the corridor on the last day, and the hall charges for what gets left.

Studios and duplexes are a different job

A standard single room is an hour. A duplex with a mezzanine, or a studio somebody has furnished properly over a year, is two or three, and it goes up a staircase inside the flat as well as up the building.

Tell us which room type you are in when you ask for a price. It is the difference between the bottom and the top of the band, and it decides whether we send one person or two.

Worth knowing

  • Load or unload before ten in the morning, when Charlotte Street is still empty
  • Agree with your flatmates who brings the kettle and the pans before anybody buys one
  • Say whether you are in a standard room, a studio or a duplex, because they are different jobs
  • Clear the food cupboard a week before the end of term rather than on the last morning
  • Book the June move early: Fitzrovia halls all empty in the same few days

Astor College: common questions

How much does it cost to move into Astor College?

A single room is £150 to £340 including VAT, most around £220. A studio or duplex sits at the top of that band or a little above, because there is more in it and there is a staircase inside the flat as well as the building.

Can you stop outside 99 Charlotte Street?

Briefly and early. Charlotte Street is Camden controlled parking with no loading bay, and from mid-morning it fills with restaurant deliveries and pavement tables. Before ten it is a different street. After that we work from a side street and carry.

Is Astor College catered?

No, it is self-catered, which is the main practical difference from Ramsay Hall round the corner. Kitchen equipment is worth bringing, and it is worth agreeing with flatmates who brings what so you do not end up with four kettles and no colander.

What happens to things I leave behind in June?

The hall clears them and charges for it. That is what our end of term clearance is for: £120 to £280 for a room, taken to a licensed transfer station with a waste transfer note, which is cheaper than the hall doing it and better than leaving it in the corridor.
