Loading and parking
Maple Street is narrow, busy with deliveries to the offices around it, and has no loading bay of its own. Everything within a few streets is Camden or Westminster controlled parking, so a van left on a single yellow during the working day is ticketed. On move-in weekend UCL runs an arrival system with timed slots and marshals, and it works well as long as you are in your slot. Outside that weekend we load from the nearest legal stop and carry, which on a single room is a few minutes rather than a problem.

Every catered hall in London arrives on the same weekend and Ramsay is one of the bigger ones. The slot you are allocated is the one thing that decides how the day goes, so take an early Saturday or a Sunday afternoon if you get the choice. Mid-morning Saturday is when everyone else is there.
The other thing that helps is arriving with less. A room in a catered hall does not need pans, a kettle or a drying rack, and every one of those is a box you carry up a lift queue and take home again in June.
June, and where it all goes
Contracts run to mid June and the hall wants the room empty. Most people are flying home, going back to a family house outside London, or moving into a shared flat that is not available until September, and the third group is the one with a problem.
We move rooms into self storage in June and back out in September as one booking rather than two, which is cheaper and means the same crew knows what it packed. Nothing is stored on our premises: you pay the facility and we do the moving.
Worth knowing
- Take the earliest or latest arrival slot offered rather than the middle of Saturday
- Do not bring kitchen equipment to a catered hall, because you will carry it twice
- Label boxes with your room number rather than your name, which is what the lift queue needs
- Book the June move before exams start, not after, when everyone books at once
- Ask us about storage and the September return at the same time, since booking both is cheaper

How much does it cost to move into Ramsay Hall?
A single room is £150 to £340 including VAT, most around £220. That covers the crew, the van, the wrapping, the fuel and the Congestion Charge. A run to Heathrow or Gatwick at the end of term is £120 to £260.
Can you park outside Ramsay Hall?
Only briefly, and not at all on a single yellow during the working day without being ticketed. Maple Street is narrow with no loading bay. On the September arrival weekend UCL runs timed slots with marshals, which is the easiest time to unload. At any other time we work from the nearest legal stop.
What time should I arrive on move-in weekend?
Whatever slot you are given, and if you have a choice take an early Saturday or a Sunday afternoon. Mid-morning Saturday is when the largest number of the 469 rooms arrive at once, and the lifts and the entrance are the bottleneck rather than the road.
Do you handle the summer storage run as well?
Yes, and it is cheaper booked as one job. We take the room to a storage facility in June and bring it back in September, £280 to £620 for both legs depending on how much there is. The facility fees you pay the facility; we do not hold goods ourselves.
Do I need to bring kitchen things to a catered hall?
No, and this is the single most common wasted journey we see. Ramsay is catered, so pans, a kettle and a drying rack come in September and go home in June without ever being used. Bring a mug.
