Loading and parking
Gower Street is a busy one-way road running north through Camden controlled parking, with a cycle lane along it and no loading bay outside the hall. UCL describes the arrangement for this building as on-street stopping to unload only, so the van stops, the room comes off, and the van moves on rather than waiting while you check in. Inside, the building is a set of converted Victorian houses with no lift at all, so the carry from the pavement to the room is stairs from the front door upwards.
More on Bloomsbury parking and access →No lift, and a staircase in every house
The houses on this stretch of Gower Street were built as family homes in the nineteenth century and they still have the staircases of family homes: narrow, turning at every landing, and steeper than anything in a purpose-built hall. A room on the top floor is several flights up, and nothing about that changes on move-in day.
The practical answer is to pack small. Bags and medium boxes that one person can carry up a turning staircase are far quicker than a few large ones, and a full-size trunk that looked sensible at home is the single worst thing to bring here.
Twin rooms mean two sets of belongings
Around half the rooms at Arthur Tattersall are twins, which is unusual for a UCL hall and easy to forget when booking. Two people moving out of one room in June is two rooms of belongings through one doorway on the same morning, and it is worth agreeing with whoever you share with who goes first.
Because the hall is self-catered, kitchen equipment is worth bringing, but the shared kitchens are not large and the stairs are the same stairs. Agree with the rest of the house who brings the kettle before four of them arrive.
Worth knowing
- Pack into bags and medium boxes you can carry up a narrow staircase on your own
- Tell us your floor when you book, because there is no lift and it decides the crew
- If you are in a twin, agree with your roommate who moves out first in June
- Check in at 117 Gower Street, which is where UCL runs reception for this building
- Book the June move before exams, since the Gower Street halls all empty in the same few days
Arthur Tattersall House: common questions
How much does it cost to move into Arthur Tattersall House?
A single room is £150 to £340 including VAT, most around £220, covering the crew, the van, the wrapping, the fuel and the Congestion Charge. An upper floor room sits higher in that band than a ground floor one because there is no lift and every box goes up by hand.
Can you park outside Arthur Tattersall House?
Only to unload. UCL describes it as on-street stopping for unloading only, and Gower Street is a one-way Camden road with a cycle lane and no loading bay. We stop, unload quickly and move the van, rather than leaving it outside while you check in.
Does Arthur Tattersall House have a lift?
No. UCL says so on its own page for the hall, and it is a set of converted Grade II Victorian houses with the original staircases. If you need lift access UCL advises that this building will not suit you, and if you do not, pack small.
Is Arthur Tattersall House catered?
No, it is self-catered with shared kitchens and bathrooms. Kitchen equipment is worth bringing, but agree with the rest of the kitchen who brings what, because it all goes up the same stairs.
Can you store my room over the summer?
Yes. We take it to a storage facility in June and bring it back in September, £280 to £620 for both legs booked together. You pay the facility for the storage itself; we do not hold goods on our own premises.
