Waterloo is Lambeth and it is hemmed in. Waterloo Road, York Road and Stamford Street are all red route or too busy to stand on, and the streets around the station fill with taxis and deliveries. The blocks off Lower Marsh and around Roupell Street are a mix of lifts and no lifts, and the conversions in the older terraces have tight staircases. The newer developments towards the South Bank have loading bays and concierges that need booking. Where nothing on the street works we apply to Lambeth for a suspension, which wants several working days.

Wandsworth is two routes in one. The riverside blocks around Wandsworth Town station and along the Thames have underground or gated loading bays, goods lifts booked with the concierge, and sometimes a height restriction that rules out a Luton. The terraces off Old York Road, around Wandsworth Common and up towards Southfields are ordinary Wandsworth controlled parking with resident bays, front gardens and a staircase that turns at the half landing. The Wandsworth one-way system and the Armoury Way gyratory are unpleasant to navigate and impossible to load from, so the exact address matters more here than the area name does.
The journey
Along the river on the A3205 through Battersea and Wandsworth, or out on the A3 through Clapham and down. The river route is more direct and gets congested around the Wandsworth gyratory; the A3 is faster in flow and longer in distance.
Four and a half miles either way. The gyratory at the Wandsworth end is the pinch point on both and it is a bad one in the evening, which is the main reason we prefer a morning start on this corridor.
Which Wandsworth, because they are different jobs
A riverside flat with a goods lift and a booked bay is the bottom of the band. A first floor conversion off Old York Road with a front garden step, a turning staircase and no lift is the top of it, for the same furniture.
The area name tells us nothing useful. The address tells us the vehicle, the crew size and whether we need to speak to a concierge, which is why we ask for it rather than for the postcode.
Getting out of Waterloo
The origin is the constrained end on this route, which is unusual. There is very little legal stopping near the station and the red routes leave few options, so we work from the side streets and apply for a suspension more often than not.
Give us the exact address a fortnight out if you can. Lambeth wants several working days for a suspension and the streets that need one are exactly the streets where you cannot improvise on the day.
