Loading in Shoreditch
Shoreditch loading is decided by which side of Great Eastern Street you are on. The converted warehouses off Curtain Road and Rivington Street have goods lifts that were retrofitted into buildings never designed for them, and several are slower than carrying. Almost everything sits in a Hackney or Tower Hamlets controlled parking zone, Old Street and Great Eastern Street are red route or heavily restricted, and Shoreditch High Street has no realistic stopping during the day. We load from a side street or apply for a suspension, and we ask which floor before we ask what you own.

Hackney splits three ways for unloading. The Victorian terraces around London Fields and Clapton have a bay on the street more often than Shoreditch does, and the staircases are tight but predictable. The ex-council blocks off Mare Street and around Homerton have parking but a long carry from the car park to the door, sometimes a hundred metres across a podium. The new builds along the canal and around Hackney Central have concierges and goods lifts that need booking, usually two working days ahead. Hackney Council runs its own suspension application with its own lead time, so a move that crosses from Tower Hamlets needs two applications rather than one.
The journey
The direct line is Kingsland Road north, which becomes the A10 and is the single most congested option at almost every hour of the day. Buses, cyclists, roadworks and a bus lane that runs most of its length mean a two mile drive that can take thirty five minutes at four in the afternoon.
We usually go around it. Hackney Road east then north through Broadway Market, or up through Haggerston depending on where in Hackney you are landing. Neither is quicker on paper and both are quicker in practice. None of this changes your price, because we quoted the job rather than the hour, but it does change what time we tell you we will be finished.
The warehouse conversion problem
Shoreditch has more converted industrial buildings per square mile than anywhere else in the centre, and they are the reason this short move is not a cheap one. A fourth floor loft with twelve foot ceilings holds furniture bought for twelve foot ceilings. Sofas that will not turn on a half landing, shelving units built in the room, and a goods lift shared with a design studio doing a delivery.
We price those from the lift answer rather than the room count. A two bedroom loft with a working goods lift is a £680 job. The same flat with a lift that takes one item at a time, or no lift at all above the second floor, is a £1,400 job with three crew. It is worth telling us which one you have before we quote rather than after.
Two councils, two suspension applications
The Shoreditch end is Hackney or Tower Hamlets depending on the street, and the boundary runs through the middle of the area rather than round it. The Hackney end is Hackney throughout. Where both ends need a suspended bay, that is two applications if you are starting in Tower Hamlets, each with its own form, fee and lead time of several working days.
We handle both and pass each cost through at what the council charged. What we need from you is the exact address rather than the postcode, because an application to the wrong authority burns the lead time and leaves you with nowhere legal to stop on the morning.

Because the drive is only two miles, almost all of the variation comes from the stairs and the lift at each end rather than the distance.
Does the two mile distance make it cheaper than a longer move?
A little, but less than people expect. Fuel and drive time are a small part of a Central London job. A Shoreditch fourth floor walk-up to a Hackney first floor costs more than a ground floor Shoreditch flat to a ground floor flat in Croydon, because the carrying is the job and the driving is the gap between two lots of carrying.
Do I need a parking suspension at both ends?
On the Shoreditch end, usually, because the streets off Curtain Road and Rivington Street rarely have a free bay during the working day. On the Hackney end, less often, since the terraced streets around London Fields and Clapton have resident bays you can sometimes use. Each suspension is £45 to £120 a day and we apply on your behalf.
Can you get a Luton down the streets at either end?
Usually on the Hackney end. Less often in Shoreditch, where several of the lanes off Rivington Street and the yards behind Great Eastern Street will not take a box van. Where that applies we bring a transit and do a second run, and it is inside the quoted figure rather than added when we arrive.
How long does the move take?
Four to five hours for a one bedroom, most of a day for a two or three bedroom with stairs at both ends. The drive is fifteen to thirty five minutes each way, so the number of runs matters more than you would think on a journey this short.
