Why people make this move
- A Shad Thames warehouse flat and a Greenwich terrace cost similar money and one of them has a garden and a park
- Families leaving a converted wharf building with a lift and no outside space, for the streets around Greenwich and Blackheath
- People who want the river without the service charge, which on the Bermondsey wharf conversions is substantial
Loading and unloading
Loading in Bermondsey
Bermondsey divides into the wharf conversions and everything else. The buildings along Shad Thames and around Butlers Wharf sit on lanes that were never meant for vehicles: several are too narrow for a Luton, some are cobbled, and the loading is genuinely tight even in a transit. Those buildings usually have a goods lift and a concierge, both of which help. The streets inland towards Bermondsey Street and Jamaica Road are ordinary Southwark controlled parking with Victorian terraces and ex-council blocks, and a suspension is often worth having. Tooley Street and Jamaica Road themselves are too busy to load from.
More on Bermondsey access →Unloading in Greenwich
Greenwich town centre is a conservation area with a one-way system, and the streets around the Cutty Sark, the market and College Approach carry heavy pedestrian traffic from mid morning. Loading there is an early job or a difficult one. The Georgian and early Victorian terraces up towards Croom's Hill and around Greenwich Park have tight staircases and, in several cases, a raised ground floor with external steps. The newer flats towards Greenwich Millennium Village and the peninsula are the easy end of the route, with lifts, parking and loading bays. Royal Greenwich runs the suspension process and, as with most boroughs, wants several working days.
The journey
Jamaica Road into Lower Road, then Evelyn Street and Creek Road, which is the A200 for most of its length and runs through Deptford. It is a straightforward four miles and it is slow in the evening peak, particularly around Surrey Quays and the approach to Deptford Bridge.
The Rotherhithe Tunnel is the wrong direction for this move and the Blackwall Tunnel is a long way round. There is no clever alternative to the A200, so we schedule around the peak rather than trying to dodge it.
The vehicle question, asked at both ends
Most Central London moves have one end that dictates the van. This route often has two. A Shad Thames lane that will not take a box van, and a Greenwich terrace on a street the one-way system feeds badly.
Where either end rules out a Luton we quote a transit and two runs from the start. It adds an hour or so to the day and nothing to the figure you were given, which is the entire point of quoting the job rather than the hour.
Greenwich timing, and the market
Greenwich town centre behaves like a tourist destination because it is one. From mid morning the streets around the market, the Cutty Sark and College Approach fill up, and a van stops being useful.
We start early on this corridor for the same reason we start early going into Camden. If your Greenwich address is up the hill towards the park or out on the peninsula, it matters far less, and we will tell you which of those you are when you give us the address.
What makes this move go well
- Tell us if the Bermondsey end is on one of the Shad Thames lanes, because it decides the vehicle
- Take an early slot if you are unloading anywhere near Greenwich market
- Check whether the Greenwich property has external steps up to a raised ground floor
- Avoid the A200 between four and seven if you have any say in the schedule
Bermondsey to Greenwich: common questions
How much is a man and van from Bermondsey to Greenwich?
A one bedroom flat is £470 to £920, a two bedroom £740 to £1,510 and a three bedroom house £1,140 to £2,160, including VAT. The four mile drive is a small part of it. The vehicle the two ends allow, and the stairs, are what move the figure.
Can you get a Luton down Shad Thames?
Down some of it. Several of the lanes around Butlers Wharf are too narrow or too tight to turn a box van, and a few are cobbled. Where that applies we bring a transit and do two runs, quoted that way from the start rather than discovered on the morning.
Is Greenwich town centre difficult to unload in?
From mid morning onwards, yes. It is a conservation area with a one-way system and it fills with visitors, so we work early where the address is near the market or the Cutty Sark. Addresses up towards the park or out on the peninsula are much easier at any hour.
Do I pay the Congestion Charge on this route?
It is inside the price either way. Bermondsey sits just outside the zone at most addresses, but where a move touches it the £18 daily charge is in the figure we quote rather than added at the end.
How long does the move take?
Five to six hours for a one bedroom, a full day for a two or three bedroom, and longer where both ends need a transit and two runs. We would rather book the day and finish early than promise an afternoon and miss it.
