Loading and parking
High Holborn is a busy through road with bus stops and marked loading restrictions along much of its length, and the kerb outside number 178 is not somewhere a van can wait while a room is carried up. Everything around it is Camden controlled parking, so a van on a yellow line during the working day is ticketed quickly. In practice we stop where the kerb markings allow loading, or on one of the side streets towards Covent Garden, and carry the short distance to the entrance. The building has lifts and staffed 24 hour reception, so once through the door the job is straightforward, and the September arrival weekend runs on the timed slots LSE allocates.
More on Holborn parking and access →Cluster flats mean a kitchen comes with you
Each flat at High Holborn shares a kitchen between four to six people, and the kitchens are equipped by the hall rather than empty, which makes it worth checking the inventory LSE publishes before buying anything. What most people still bring is their own pans, plates and a few jars, and those are the boxes that are awkward to pack and easy to break.
Rent includes five weekday breakfasts on campus during term, so the kitchen gets used for evenings and weekends rather than all day. That is a reason to bring less than you would for a private flat, and to agree with the rest of the flat who is bringing the toaster.
Close to campus, far from easy parking
Being ten minutes from Houghton Street is what makes High Holborn popular, and it is also why the road outside is never quiet. The difference between a twenty minute unload and an hour spent circling is choosing the right time: early morning, before the delivery traffic builds, or a weekend afternoon outside the arrival slots.
The residence also has twin rooms with their own bathroom, and a twin is two people moving in and out of the same door at once. If you share, tell us, because two sets of belongings on one booking is cheaper than two separate vans arriving at the same busy kerb.
Worth knowing
- Book an early morning slot outside arrival weekend, before the High Holborn delivery traffic starts
- Check what the flat kitchen already has before packing pans and plates
- If you are in a twin, book one move for both of you rather than two
- Label boxes with your flat and room number, which is what the lift and the corridor need
- Clear the shared kitchen of your food a week before the contract ends, not on the last morning
High Holborn Residence: common questions
How much does it cost to move into High Holborn Residence?
A single room is £150 to £340 including VAT, most around £220, covering the crew, the van, the wrapping, the fuel and the Congestion Charge. Storage out in June and back in September is £280 to £620 for both legs booked together.
Can you park outside High Holborn Residence?
Not for long. High Holborn is a busy main road with bus stops and loading restrictions marked on the kerb, and the surrounding streets are Camden controlled parking. We stop where loading is permitted or on a nearby side street and carry to the entrance, and on the September arrival weekend we work to the slot LSE gives you.
Is High Holborn Residence catered?
No. It is self-catered, with a shared kitchen in each flat of four to six, although rent includes five weekday breakfasts on campus during term. Kitchen things are worth bringing here, which is not true at Bankside, Carr-Saunders, Passfield or Rosebery.
Does the building have a lift?
Yes, LSE lists lift access at High Holborn, along with 24 hour staff cover. Tell us your floor and flat number when you book so the crew know where they are going before they arrive.
What happens to things I do not want at the end of the year?
Our end of term clearance takes them for £120 to £280 a room, to a licensed transfer station with a waste transfer note. Usable furniture, books and appliances go to reuse where we can place them, which lowers the weight and the price.
