Moving in and out of Carr-Saunders Hall

from £120

Every figure includes VAT.

Carr-Saunders is one of the smallest LSE halls, around 160 bed spaces on Fitzroy Street with the BT Tower almost directly overhead, and it is further from the campus than most, close to half an hour on foot. Its size is the useful thing for moving: an arrival weekend here is a steady trickle rather than the crowd that forms outside the big catered halls.

Loading and parking

Fitzroy Street is a narrow one-carriageway Fitzrovia street lined with offices and flats, Camden controlled parking throughout, with no dedicated loading bay at the hall. It is quieter than Charlotte Street a block away, and early in the day there is usually room to stop briefly where the markings allow loading. The hall has a lift, so the constraint is the kerb rather than the stairs, and at around 160 bed spaces the September arrival is small enough that the street rarely backs up the way Maple Street does outside Ramsay Hall.

A small hall with UCL for neighbours

Carr-Saunders sits in the same few streets as UCL's Ramsay Hall and Astor College, so on the September arrival weekend the vans on Fitzroy Street are not all heading to the same door. The hall itself is small, but the neighbourhood is not, and the busiest hour on Saturday morning is busy for reasons that have nothing to do with LSE.

That is why an early slot is worth more here than the size of the hall suggests. By mid-morning the streets between Tottenham Court Road and Warren Street are carrying three sets of arrivals at once.

Catered, and a shorter contract than most

Rent at Carr-Saunders includes six dinners and a brunch a week during term, so a full kitchen box is wasted weight. A mug, a plate and whatever you need for breakfast is plenty, and everything beyond that goes back out again at the end of the year.

LSE lists a 31 week contract here, noticeably shorter than the 38 weeks at Bankside or Rosebery. Check the end date in your own contract rather than assuming mid June, because the move out, the storage run and the airport run all hang off it.

Worth knowing

  • Take an early arrival slot, because UCL halls on the neighbouring streets arrive the same weekend
  • Do not bring a kitchen to a catered hall, since you will carry it back out
  • Check your contract end date, which is not the same as at the bigger LSE halls
  • If you share a twin, book both people as one move
  • Ask for storage and the September return together, which is one quote and one crew

Carr-Saunders Hall: common questions

How much does it cost to move into Carr-Saunders Hall?

A single room is £150 to £340 including VAT, most around £220, covering the crew, the van, the wrapping, the fuel and the Congestion Charge. A run to Heathrow or Gatwick at the end of the year is £120 to £260.

Can you park outside Carr-Saunders Hall?

Briefly, where the kerb markings allow loading, and more easily early in the day. Fitzroy Street is narrow Camden controlled parking with no loading bay at the hall, and on the September weekend it is shared with arrivals to the UCL halls a street or two away.

Is Carr-Saunders Hall catered?

Yes. LSE includes six dinners and one brunch a week during term, so pans and a kettle are weight you carry in and carry out again. Bring what you need for breakfast and leave the rest at home.

Does Carr-Saunders have a lift?

Yes, LSE lists lift access. At around 160 bed spaces the lift queue on arrival day is short compared with the larger halls, which is one of the quieter parts of moving here.

When does the contract at Carr-Saunders end?

LSE lists a 31 week contract, shorter than most of its halls, so the date is in your contract rather than in a general term calendar. Book the move out, the storage run or the airport run against that date, and book it before exams begin.
