Loading and parking

Sumner Street is Southwark controlled parking and it sits in the middle of the Bankside visitor route, so pedestrian volumes from mid-morning are the real constraint rather than the traffic. There is space to unload at the building on the September arrival weekend because LSE runs a marshalled system, and considerably less at any other time. The riverside walk itself is not a vehicle route, so anything arriving from that direction is a carry.

The biggest single arrival in London

Almost 600 rooms turning over in a weekend puts more people through one door than any other hall we work at. LSE manages it with timed slots and marshals and it runs well, but the slot is not a suggestion: arrive outside it and you wait.

Because the hall is catered, the useful advice is the same as at Ramsay. Do not bring a kitchen. The room is small, the storage in it is smaller, and everything you carry in you carry out again in June.

Bankside in June, when the whole street empties at once

LSE contracts end within a few days of each other, so Sumner Street has several hundred people moving out across one week. Most are flying, and a run to Heathrow or Gatwick with cases and boxes is £120 to £260 with the drive built in.

The rest need somewhere to put a room for the summer. Booked as one job, storage out in June and back in September is £280 to £620, and it is materially cheaper than arranging each leg separately in a panic.

Worth knowing

  • Take your allocated arrival slot seriously, because at 595 rooms the system is the only thing that works
  • Unload before ten if you are moving outside the September weekend, before Bankside fills with visitors
  • Do not bring pans to a catered hall
  • Book the airport run before exams rather than the night before the flight
  • Ask for storage and the September return together, which is one quote and one crew

Bankside House: common questions

How much does it cost to move into Bankside House?

A single room is £150 to £340 including VAT, most around £220, covering the crew, the van, the wrapping, the fuel and the Congestion Charge. A Heathrow or Gatwick run at the end of term is £120 to £260.

Where do you unload for Bankside House?

At the building during the September arrival weekend, when LSE marshals it. At any other time from the nearest legal stop on Sumner Street, and before mid-morning if possible, because the Bankside visitor route fills the pavements from about ten.

Is Bankside House catered?

Yes. Meals are provided, so kitchen equipment is weight you carry in September and carry out again in June. The rooms are not large and the storage in them is not either.

Can you take me to the airport at the end of term?

Yes, £120 to £260 to Heathrow or Gatwick with the drive built into the figure. Book it before exams start. The week LSE contracts end, several hundred people leave Sumner Street within a few days and the good slots go first.
