Moving in and out of Stamford Street Apartments

from £120

Every figure includes VAT.

Stamford Street Apartments is about as close to a lecture theatre as a London hall gets: 127 Stamford Street faces King's Waterloo Campus, and the Strand Campus is a walk over Waterloo Bridge. The price of that position is the road outside, which carries traffic heading for Blackfriars and Waterloo station all day, and it is the road rather than the building that decides how a move here goes.

Loading and parking

Stamford Street is a main road between Blackfriars and Waterloo with buses on it and very little slack for a stopped van, and the side streets around it are Lambeth controlled parking. There is no public loading bay we would rely on at the door, so outside the September arrival weekend we plan the stop before the day, load from the nearest legal place, and carry. The residence has a 24 hour reception, which helps when a delivery or a collection does not line up exactly with the time on the booking.

Opposite the campus, beside the station

Being across the road from the Waterloo Campus means the pavement outside is busy with students and staff between lectures as well as commuters walking to and from the station, so a trolley of boxes is competing for space with a lot of people at the start and end of the working day. The quiet window is mid-morning on a weekday or early on a weekend, and that is when we would rather move you outside the arrival weekend.

In September the arrival weekend is organised by King's, and new residents receive the details from the university. Follow those rather than turning up early in the hope of beating the queue, because the reception staff can only check in so many people at once.

Studios hold more than rooms

Stamford Street has standard en-suites of about nine square metres, and larger en-suites and studios of ten to fourteen, all with a small double bed. A studio has its own kitchen, which means its own pans, plates and food cupboard, and that is closer to a small flat than to a hall room when it comes to packing up in June.

Tell us which room type you are in when you ask for a price. A standard en-suite is comfortably one person and a short job; a studio that has been lived in properly for a year can be two people and a larger van.

Worth knowing

  • Move outside the rush hours, when the pavement is full of commuters walking to Waterloo
  • Follow the arrival instructions King's sends rather than arriving early to beat the queue
  • Say whether you are in an en-suite or a studio, because a studio has a whole kitchen to pack
  • Bring bedding for a small double rather than a single, since every bed here is 120cm wide
  • Book the June move before exams, when first years across both King's residences leave together

Stamford Street Apartments: common questions

How much does it cost to move into Stamford Street Apartments?

A single room is £150 to £340 including VAT, most around £220, covering the crew, the van, the wrapping, the fuel and the Congestion Charge. A studio sits towards the top of the band because it has a kitchen of its own to pack.

Can you park outside Stamford Street Apartments?

Only briefly, and only where it is legal to load. Stamford Street is a busy main road between Blackfriars and Waterloo with buses on it, and the streets around it are Lambeth controlled parking. We plan the stopping point before the day and carry from there, which on one room is a few minutes.

Is Stamford Street Apartments catered?

No, it is self-catered. The en-suite rooms share kitchens, so agree with flatmates who is bringing the kettle and the pans. Studios have their own kitchen, which is worth equipping and worth remembering when you pack up in June.

Can you take me and my things to Heathrow at the end of the year?

Yes, £120 to £260 to Heathrow or Gatwick with cases and boxes, with the drive built into the figure. Anything too heavy for the flight can be shipped separately, and it is worth sorting that before the last week rather than during it.

Who can live at Stamford Street?

King's lists Stamford Street Apartments as available only to first-year undergraduates, and it is owned and run by the university itself rather than a private provider. Most residents leave in the same fortnight in June, which is why the move out needs booking early.
