London to Leeds is a straight run up the M1 into a city that is genuinely easy to unload in. Waterside apartment blocks with lifts and loading bays, and terraced streets in Headingley and Chapel Allerton with front doors you can park outside. The difficulty on this route is the four hour drive and the shape it forces on the day, not the buildings.

Why people make this move

  • The financial, legal and civil service employers that have moved functions out of London, which makes a share of this route employer-paid
  • The universities, which produce a heavy September and a heavy June in both directions
  • People buying a house outright with what a London deposit was worth, which is the most common story on this route

Loading and unloading

Loading in Central London

The London end runs to a tight schedule on this route. Early start, everything packed and sealed before the crew arrives, and a legal loading position rather than a long carry. An hour lost loading in London is an hour of unloading lost at the far end of a four hour drive, and that is the whole constraint.

Unloading in Leeds

Leeds is among the easiest destinations on this list. The city centre and waterside blocks around Granary Wharf, Holbeck and the Calls have lifts, concierges and loading bays, usually needing a slot booked a day or two ahead. The terraced streets in Headingley, Hyde Park and Chapel Allerton have street parking and front doors reachable from the pavement, though the older back-to-backs and through terraces often have a flight of stone steps up from the street. Student housing in Hyde Park and Headingley moves on a fixed calendar and the first week of September is heavily booked. Leeds City Council handles bay suspensions where a street needs one, which is less often than in London.

The journey

M1 almost the whole way, a hundred and ninety five miles and around four hours. It is a more reliable run than the M6 to Manchester, with the usual delays around Northampton and the Sheffield stretch.

A one or two bedroom fits in a day: load early, drive, unload in the afternoon. A three or four bedroom house is usually loaded one day and unloaded the next, quoted as a single job.

Student moves and the September problem

Headingley and Hyde Park empty and refill on the university calendar, and the first two weeks of September are the busiest fortnight of the year on this route. Every removals firm in Leeds knows it and prices accordingly.

If your date can move outside that window it is worth ten to fifteen per cent. If it cannot, the constraint is availability rather than price, so book as early as you have a date rather than waiting to compare quotes.

Stone steps, which nobody mentions

The Leeds terraces, particularly the older back-to-backs and through terraces in Hyde Park and parts of Headingley, frequently have a flight of stone steps up from the pavement to the front door.

It is a small thing that adds up on a full house. A dozen steps repeated a hundred and forty times is an hour, and it is the sort of detail we would rather have at the quote stage than find at four in the afternoon after a four hour drive.

Two hundred miles, and why a house takes two days

Four hours each way is eight hours of driving. A three bedroom house takes three or four hours to load and as long to unload, and those numbers do not fit inside one day of daylight.

We load in the afternoon of day one and unload on the morning of day two, quoted as one job with one figure. The van is locked overnight and everything stays inside it, covered by goods in transit insurance throughout.

What makes this move go well

  • Avoid the first fortnight of September, which is the busiest and most expensive window on this route
  • Say whether the property has stone steps up from the pavement, because it changes the crew on a full house
  • Book the loading bay and goods lift if the destination is a waterside or city centre block
  • Have everything packed and sealed the night before, since the schedule has no slack

Central London to Leeds: common questions

How much do removals from London to Leeds cost?

A one bedroom flat is £1,150 to £1,850, a two bedroom £1,600 to £2,600 and a three bedroom house £2,100 to £3,500, including VAT. A small load is £550 to £950. That is a dedicated van and crew for your move alone on a fixed date.

Is it done in one day?

A one or two bedroom, yes. A three or four bedroom house is usually two days: loaded on the first afternoon, unloaded the next morning, quoted as a single job. Eight hours of driving plus a full house at both ends does not fit into one day of daylight.

When is the busiest time to move to Leeds?

The first two weeks of September, driven by the universities. Headingley and Hyde Park turn over almost completely in that fortnight and every firm in the city is booked. Move outside it if you can, and book very early if you cannot.

Do you do student moves?

Yes, and a single room with a bed, a desk and boxes falls in the £550 to £950 band. Tell us the floor and whether there are steps up from the street, which are the two things that decide the crew on a Leeds terrace.

What happens to my things overnight on a two day move?

They stay in the locked van, covered by our goods in transit insurance. Nothing is unloaded into storage and reloaded, which is where damage on long distance moves tends to happen.

Is there a charge for mileage?

No. The fuel, the mileage, the crew, the wrapping and the Congestion Charge on the London leg are all inside one figure agreed before we start. Council bay suspensions are the only thing quoted separately, passed on at cost.
